Female facial attractiveness: Participant Information

You are invited to take part in a study to look at what makes female faces attractive.
Previous research has shown that women who have feminine facial characteristics tend to be considered more attractive by males. These characteristics include having clear skin, large eyes and a small jaw. Most research has assumed that men focus almost exclusively on these characteristics when they judge the attractiveness of a face. Common sense tells us, though, that this can’t be the whole story, otherwise all men would be attracted to the same woman. The purpose of the study is to investigate variation in the kinds of female faces considered to be attractive (by both men and women) in relation to 2 main factors: family ambition and attitudes towards gender roles. If you choose to participate, you will be asked some background questions (e.g. your age and sexual orientation) and some questions about family size and your attitudes towards traditional gender roles. You will also be asked to rate a series male and female faces for attractiveness (although we are interested in female facial attractiveness here, it is useful for us to compare this with male facial attractiveness).
The experiment takes 15 to 20 minutes to complete.
You must be 18 years or over to participate in this experiment

Female facial attractiveness: Informed consent

1. Participation in this experiment is entirely voluntary. You do not have to take part if you don't want to
2. You don’t have to answer all the questions. If you would prefer not to answer any question, you are not obliged to and this will not affect your ability to progress through the experiment
3. You may decide to stop being a part of the research study at any time without explanation. There is a “Quit” button on each page, which will take you straight to the end of the experiment and cause your data to be removed from the experiment. If you close the browser during the experiment, your data will also be withdrawn from the experiment. When you complete the experiment, you will enter a username. Please take a note of your username in case you wish to request your data be removed at a later date.
4. All the information you provide is completely confidential and anonymous. You will not provide any information that could be used to identify you so that there is no way the experimenter, or anyone else, will know who you are. All answers will be downloaded onto files that the experimenter will keep password protected and that cannot be accessed by anyone else.
5. There are no known risks for you in this experiment.
